30 YEARS OF MAKING HABITAT A HABIT
by Bret “T-Bone” Amundson
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Pheasants Forever, the “habitat organization”. To help commemorate, Pheasant Fest will be taking place in the Minneapolis Convention Center in Twin Cities this weekend. Hours are Friday February 15th from 1pm – 9pm, Saturday 9a – 6p and Sunday from 10a – 5p. Pheasant Fest bounces around to different locations, so if you miss it this year, you may not have a chance to go again for awhile.
MNSJ is proud of the work PF has done and the fact that it was started right here in our home state. Matt Soberg goes into their history in our winter issue, which hits newsstands and mailboxes this week.
Rehan Nana also joined us on last weeks MNSJ Radio show (listen to his interview here) to discuss what PF is all about and preview this weekends Pheasant Fest.
One of the highlights is the “Bird Dog Parade”. Nearly 40 sporting dog breeds will open the event on Friday. According to www.PheasantFest.org: “From Boykins to Brittanys, German Shorthairs to German Longhairs, Goldens to Gordons, Labs to Llewellins, Springers to Setters, Wirehairs to Weirmeraners…” Ron Schara will serve as Grand Marshal and you should arrive at 12:30 to get a good seat.
Wild game chefs Georgia Pellegrini and Hank Shaw will speak and “dish” out their favorite recipes. Pellegrini will discuss “Girl Hunter”, her latest book that looks at thinking about the meal during the hunt.
Of course habitat will be a big topic of discussion with the Landowner Habitat Help Room. This is an invaluable resource for landowners who want to improve wildlife habitat on their property.
Wildlife photography, guns and of course BIRDS will be covered in this upland game hunters playground. More information can be found at www.Pheasantfest.org
Come find the MNSJ booth (#527 – see the map here), located next to Benelli. We’ll be giving away photographs, subscriptions and copies of our magazine. We’ll also be on hand with the radio show recording interviews for upcoming shows. Stop out and see us! Mika will be with and I might just need someone to take her for a “walk” if you know what I mean…
